Roatàn, Honduras

Going to Roatàn was planned as a short trip of 3 and half days. We wanted to try diving, relax in the sun and get some saltwater on the skin!

We stayed in the West End. It’s a huge diving community and you can find discovery dives at many dive shops. The West End had a nice variety of restaurants and hotels. There was a great coffee shop close as well.

Hotels seem to range a lot in pricing and amenities. After being there I would be less concerned about booking a hotel right on the water as water and beach access is everywhere. We stayed this first night at Posada Acro Iris. I liked this hotel. It had some good basics and the location was good. We only needed to stay one night as we had originally wanted to stay at the Beach House and spent the rest of our trip there. I will tell you the Beach House has over the top customer service during our stay and when booking with them. They emailed us pre check in information, places to dive, alternative hotel for our first night and arranged for a fantastic driver t pick us up and return us to the airport. The food at this hotel was amazingly good!

We spent time at Sundowners bar. They only accept cash or PayPal! Check the hours – closes at 10 PM. The fish bites where really good, as was the chicken! There was live entertainment every night we were there.

If you lose your sunglasses you can buy another pair from a fellow who walks around and sells them on the beach. $10 US. Otherwise you might be able to find some expensive ones but know they are likely going to end up with the first pair, lost!!

The Beach Club is at West Bay beach. For $25 US you can enjoy the Sunday brunch which included a lot of food and all you can drink bloody Mary’s or mimosas and a Beach Chair!

We also purchased jewelry that was made from Lionfish skeleton. It is beautiful. Lionfish is an invasive species and are hunted to control the population. I was able to see one on the first day of my scuba dive (another post coming about that!).

Something else I learnt was the island is working hard at being plasticless. All straws were paper! Many places encourage you bring your own cup/water bottle.

Overall I really liked Roatàn.

It was relaxed, sunny and the water is clear as warm!
